Leo Sunshine (aka David V. Horste) is a full-time lapidary artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Since 1992, Leo has been transforming raw stones into works of art, channeling the energy of the Earth through the alchemy of cutting, polishing, and shaping. His journey began as a young rock enthusiast at the Michigan Gem & Mineral Society, where he learned the craft of stone cutting and silversmithing. After studying at the University of Michigan, Leo joined the local arts scene, where the magic of handmade jewelry and beads spoke to his soul.

At DVHdesigns, Leo is not just creating jewelry, he’s a muse—providing unique cabochons for other artists and crafting striking focal beads for those looking to string together their own expressions of creativity. His material palette is as diverse as the energies he channels: semi-precious stones, fossils, and even found objects like concrete, bowling balls, and Fordite (car paint overspray). Yet, it’s his signature sculptural "Hearts of Stone" that carries the deepest energy, inspired by the profound loss of his dear friend and apprentice, Richard Waugh, in 2001.

With his trusty diamond saws, grinding wheels, sanding belts, and polishing wheels, Leo creates pieces that connect the ancient energies of the Earth with the modern need for self-expression.
