Dennis Portz

I have worked with clay since I was a child. Me and my siblings would dig yellow and blue clay from the stream beds in Iowa. We would make little pinch pots and “pancakes” that dried in the sun and then wash away with the next rain. I learned to throw on the pottery wheel when I was in middle school. I immediately fell in love with pottery, but after high school I fell away from it. A little over 15 years ago, pottery became a serious hobby and I started making at a community studio in Iowa and started selling at shows 5 years after. My work has a minimalistic design often with the addition of color.

Some of my work features the male nude. As a gay man that grew up in a very rural area of Iowa, I wasn’t exposed to much queer art. I believe that the male body is beautiful and I want others to see that in my work!

I make primarily wheel thrown pottery with a little hand building from time to time. The wheel is where I feel most at home. I do carving and decorations both on the wheel and off the wheel. I have been using underglazes to add color and dimension to the work. All of my work is fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln. I prefer a textured look and feel to my work. That is why I leave the exterior of the work unglazed. The interior and rims are all glazed so that they are food safe.
